The Rhode Island Supreme Court licenses all lawyers in the general practice of law. The Court does not license or
certify any lawyer as an expert or a specialist in any field of practice.
Serious Personal Injury As an Adjunct Professor of Advanced Torts at Roger Williams University School of Law, Mr. Oliveira has a deep-rooted understanding of the law of personal
injury. His academic efforts in this field allow him to remain on the cutting edge of new developments in this area of the law. He has handled and tried numerous multi-million
dollar injury cases over the years, the results of which have made a great difference in the lives of clients suffering form catastrophic injuries.
Medical Malpractice Over the years Mr. Oliveira has recovered over $10 million in representing
clients who have been injured as a consequence of negligent medical care. Having tried and handled cases in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Mr. Oliveira has examined a wide
range of medical issues and consulted with some of the best doctors in the world. Again, his position as an Adjunct Professor of Law and Medicine at a fine law school affords him
the opportunity to keep abreast of new developments in this ever-changing area of the law.
Complex Litigation Mr. Oliveira has handled numerous cases involving a number of defendants, in
both the State and Federal Courts. Many of these have presented complicated fact patterns which have required sophisticated resources to resolve successfully. This has
included handling cases outside of Rhode Island, in Massachusetts, where Mr. Oliveira is admitted to practice, and even as far away as California, where he has been permitted to practice
in an action with special permission.
Premises Security As a co-author of Commercial Premises Liability (Wiley Press 1990), Mr. Oliveira
has written and researched extensively in the area of Premises Security. He has also handled matters involving the failure of business establishments and landlords to take
appropriate precautions to protect customers and residents from foreseeable criminal conduct. This complex area of the law has been the subject of a number of presentations which
Mr. Oliveira has given, both to law students and to members of the bar.
Construction and Surety Law Mr. Oliveira has represented several national bonding companies as well as private contractors over the years with respect to contract claims
involving multi-million dollar projects. Additionally, Mr. Oliveira has served as an arbitrator and expert witness with respect to construction disputes. This varied
experience has allowed him to develop a sophisticated understanding of the various interests involved when a construction project develops problems that require the judicial system to
resolve.
Liquor Liability Mr. Oliveira has had a longstanding commitment to this serious topic. In addition to litigating numerous cases, for both plaintiffs and defendants, in
matters involving the service of alcohol to minors and to visibly intoxicated persons, Mr. Oliveira has lectured extensively to organizations and various establishments on the topic of
responsible serving practices.
